Even though Earth Day officially occurs on April 22nd, many Earth Days events have already taken place. While you may have already missed some of the environmental fun, there are still more than a few Earth Day events on the horizon. Events such as Think Green, Earth Fair San Diego, the Green Apple Festival and the South Coast Earth Day Festival just to name a few.What is Earth Day?Earth Day is actually a title used for two unique observances. One is held in the spring in the northern hemisphere and the other in the autumn for the southern hemisphere. The goal of any Earth Day is to help inspire public awareness and appreciation of environmental concerns that effect us all. While Earth Day was originally founded by John McConnell in 1969, Gaylord Nelson can be credited for what we in the United States know as Earth Day. In January 1970 Gaylord Nelson held the first Earth Day as an environmental teach-in. Thanks to him we now celebrate Earth Day every year on April 22nd.Celebrating Earth Day in Southern CaliforniaIf you are a resident of Southern California then you are geographically close to countless Earth Day events, festivals and celebrations. The following will highlight four such upcoming events.Think Green in South L.A. – April 19th, 2008Think Green is a family friendly event that will feature healthy food and healthier living. If you have been storing electronics for recycling in a future date then bring them along. Think Green will feature an electronics recycling program. All proceeds from this event will support the GreenWorks educational and outreach programs. Think Green will take place on Saturday, April 19th 2008 between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, 3650 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, Los Angeles CA. (323) 298-5077Earth Fair San Diego – April 20th, 2008Earth Fair San Diego is the combined efforts of more than 400 volunteers. This year it may be the largest free environmental fair in the world. Expect a lot from Earth Fair San Diego and it will deliver, including magicians, musicians, dancers and more. You will also find an eHome exhibit, eARTh gallery and the Cleaner Car Concourse. The Earth Fair San Diego will take place on Sunday, April 20th 2008 between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM at Balboa Park, San Diego CA. (858) 272-7370Green Apple Festival – April 20th, 2008While Earth Fair San Diego may earn the title of the largest free environmental fair, the Green Apple Festival is unique because it combines eight unique earth day celebrations taking place in different cities across the US into one mega-event. Throughout all eight locations, you can expect literally hundreds of thousands of attendees. The Green Apple Festival should be considered an earth concert because in Santa Monica alone they will be featuring thirty three different bands and artists.The Green Apple Festival will take place locally on Sunday, April 20th 2008 between 12:00 PM continuing until sunset at the Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica CA. South Coast Earth Day Festival – April 20th, 2008In the Santa Barbara area, you can find the South Coast Earth Day Festival. This event will feature earth friendly activities for the entire family. A highlight of the South Coast Earth Day Festival is the green car show.The South Coast Earth Day Festival will take place on Sunday, April 20th 2008 between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Sunken Gardens, Santa Barbara, CA.Even though Earth Day officially occurs on April 22nd you can find Earth Day events occurring throughout the entire month of April.
